3 Bedtime Rituals That Actually Work (and one that involves a wiggly-toed girl)
Written by Natalia Allen, Founder of Helios House Media and author of Martina and the Magic of Calm
If bedtime feels more like a wrestling match than a moment of calm, you’re not alone. Millions of parents face the same challenge every night—tired kids with busy brains who resist slowing down. That’s exactly why we created Martina and the Magic of Calm—to help my daughter and other children ease into sleep with mindfulness, laughter, and love.
Here are 3 calming rituals that parents in our community swear by:
1. The “Wiggle & Breathe” Routine
Inspired by Martina herself, this ritual starts with a playful invitation to “wiggle your toes like a sleepy little fox.” Once the wiggles are out, guide your child to take a few deep breaths. Count slowly—“in for four, hold for four, out for four.” Doing this 2–3 times grounds your child and prepares them for stillness.
Tip: Repeat the same phrases each night to build routine. Consistency cues the brain that it’s time to wind down.
2. The Calm Jar
Fill a small jar with water, glitter, and a little glue. Have your child shake the jar, then sit quietly together and watch the glitter settle. Explain: “This is like our thoughts—when we’re upset, everything swirls. But when we breathe and wait, things calm down.”
Why it works: It’s visual, engaging, and teaches self-regulation.
3. Story + Snuggle + Stretch
Pick a soothing story (like Martina and the Magic of Calm), cuddle up, and finish the night with a gentle stretch. Reach to the sky, sway side to side, then give yourself a big “I did it!” hug. It ends the day on a note of accomplishment and comfort.
Remember:
Bedtime doesn’t have to be perfect. What matters most is being present. Your child won’t remember how many pages you read—they’ll remember how safe and loved they felt falling asleep next to you.
